Gimbal shake error/cause on my mavic

Haven’t had a chance to fly my new mavic for last few days because of work/high wind at work. So I’ve been flying it at home in the dark after work with no issues, using the lights for position reference. I purchased blade guards since I figured they would be a good investment for my new investment, and activated the propeller guard option on DJI go4 just the other night. So finally today during lunch break was able to spread the mavics wings, with no prop guards and the gimbal was shaking while the drone was hovering. It would smoothen out during accent/decent/flying to a distant location, no warnings till it stopped and just hovered. Then I would get the yellow gimbal warning. Fly it home, and still jittered while hovering. Seemed something was out of ballance, so I switched props around, white to white, black to black, and same issue. Then I navigated the options and rediscovered the prop protector option.. was still on, but I didn’t have the prop guards on. Switched it off, long story short, problem solved. That setting throws some off set harmonics into the drone, and made the gimbal shake like crazy. Hopefully this helps some people who might have gimbal shake issues/WO crashing it yet.. or if this is common knowledge I’ll just go fly a kite.lol

Gimbals are a great tool for achieving smooth and buttery video footage.

When used correctly, gimbals can produce a professional-looking, cinema-style final product.

However, when a gimbal is used incorrectly, that Hollywood look can be interrupted and take an audience out of the moment.

Shakey gimbal footage can be extremely frustrating, but what causes it? In this article, we will answer that question and examine some common causes and easy solutions for fixing a shakey gimbal.

Gimbal shake or vibration is typically caused by either an unbalanced camera or a weight issue that is straining your gimbal’s motors. These issues are typically simple to fix either by rearranging your camera setup or changing the calibration settings on your gimbal.

Take a look at each of the following causes of camera shake to help identify a solution for your shaking gimbal.

Your Gimbal Is Not Balanced Correctly

The Problem

The most common and easiest to solve reason your gimbal may be shaking is a pretty straightforward one: you simply haven’t balanced your camera correctly.

When rushing to prepare for a shoot, it is really easy to rush through the process of balancing your gimbal. If you have done this step incorrectly, your footage could suffer from some annoying gimbal shake.

Solution

If an unbalanced gimbal is the cause of your gimbal shake, the easiest way to fix the problem is to balance your camera and gimbal slowly and methodically.

Once you are confident that your gimbal is balanced, turn on your gimbal and test it out.

If your gimbal is still experiencing shake, then keep reading to check for other possible causes of camera shake.

Your Camera Is Too Heavy

The Problem

Another common cause of a shakey gimbal is that your camera setup or “payload” is too heavy for your gimbal. This can cause your gimbal to shake as the motors on your gimbal strain to operate.

The first thing to check, even before purchasing a gimbal, is the maximum weight capacity of the gimbal. Make sure that the gimbal you own or plan to purchase can handle the weight of your camera setup.

I would suggest attaching your largest lens, as well as any accessories (think microphone, external battery etc.) and weighing everything on a scale — this should give you an accurate idea of your camera setup’s true weight.

Note: Even if your camera setup is technically light enough for your gimbal, a heavy setup on a small gimbal could strain the motors over time.

Solution

Assuming that you have weighed your camera setup and determined it is within an acceptable weight range for your gimbal, this problem can be solved by changing the settings on your gimbal.

Most consumer gimbals have changeable weight settings. These settings will either need to be changed on the gimbal itself or in the product’s app.

Most gimbal’s weight settings will be set to a default of “Medium.” Try changing this setting to a higher one. This may be labelled “High” or “Ultra.”

This said, make sure you are not overcompensating with a setting that is too high.

In order to tell if your setting is too high for your setup, attach your camera setup to your gimbal and power on the gimbal. Place your finger on the front of your lens and press down lightly. If the gimbal starts shaking, then your weight settings are too high and should be lowered.

Your Camera Is Too Light

The Problem

While weight is usually a more common issue with heavy camera setups, it is actually possible for a camera setup to be too light. A light camera setup can cause a gimbal to vibrate.

While all gimbals should specify a maximum weight limit, some will also mention a minimum weight limit.

Try attaching your smallest lens to your camera and weigh the pair on a scale — this should give you an accurate idea of your camera setup’s true minimum weight.

Solution

Assuming that you have weighed your camera setup and determined it is within an acceptable weight range for your gimbal, this problem can be solved by altering settings on your gimbal or by adding more weight to your camera setup.

Your Camera Setup Isn’t Balanced Or Symmetrical

The Problem

When attaching accessories to your camera setup, it is easy to get carried away. A microphone here, a monitor there, and before you know you’ve created a bulky unbalanced rig.

Even if your camera setup is within an acceptable weight range for your gimbal, it is still possible for it to cause your gimbal to shake if unbalanced.

To tell if an unbalanced camera setup is a reason behind your shaking gimbal, start by examining your camera setup.

Are there any large, heavy pieces hanging off your setup? Is your setup top-heavy? Or just really tall?

If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then you may have identified the problem.

Solution

To fix an unbalanced setup, start by trying to rearrange things.

Think of your gimbal like a person holding a few bags of groceries. If that person tried to hold all of the groceries in their right arm, they would likely struggle to do so. If they rearranged the groceries and held them in both arms, they would probably have a much easier time!

Just like the person holding groceries, your gimbal needs to be balanced!

So, try evening things out by weight and size.

Tips For Fixing A Shaking Gimbal

• Some gimbals have an auto-calibration setting sometimes called “auto-tune.” Try using this feature to help further avoid camera shake.
• Make sure your gimbal batteries are fully charged. Gimbal batteries low on charge could cause your gimbal’s motors to strain more, in turn causing shake.
• It may be necessary to attach accessories to your gimbal instead of your camera. Heavy or bulky accessories like a large microphone or monitor could contribute to an overly heavy or unbalanced camera setup. Try attaching them directly to your gimbal instead.

DJI drones especially the Mavic line up has this issue that comes up from time to time where it says “Gimbal Stuck, check whether gimbal lock is removed and ensure gimbal can rotate freely, Error 40002“

This happens Usually because something sticky or tiny have gotten inside the rotation areas of the gimbal, it can be liquids, solids, or in some cases, the gimbal may be dislocated.

More than 90% of the time this problem is caused by landing in sand, dust, and even on grass, where tiny particles like sand get to the gimbal and strict its movement.

Now I will show you two ways that can assist you, the first one is easy and it won’t take more than a couple of minutes and it will solve most problems. the second way I am going to show for people who have had a crash, and it is a bit more complicated.

1. Turn on the aircraft without the remote controller.
2. As the aircraft starts, help the gimbal and camera get unstuck by gently moving it around in spots where it may have trouble.
3. Repeat the process till the gimbal is able to compensate for the aircraft’s movement.
4. Finally, restart the drone and connect the controller.

Turn on Aircraft without the remote controller.

First, turn on your drone as you normally would but make sure the controller is still of cause it can give you a bunch of errors, you can also do this while the drone is still off.

Help it unstuck

Help the gimbal unstuck by moving it with your finger slowly and lightly in every direction, while doing that you can blow air on it by your mouth to help tiny particles to get unclogged.

Repeat this process until the gimbal is able to do its start-up routine freely, the gimbal should be pointing forward when it is in a good condition.

Make sure it’s working by moving the aircraft around, if it can move freely on every axis which means if the gimbal will move up-down, left-right, counterclockwise, and clockwise), if it does those movements freely you are good to go.

Connect to controller

Finally, Turn on the controller but only after you made sure you freed the gimbal until it moves/ compensates for your aircraft’s movement then connect them the error must be gone by now if not there is still something in there or it might be broken

Note: The remote won’t detect a stuck gimble unless it is still stuck.

Final alternative

If there is something that won’t come out you can buy a compressed air duster and Shoot the air into the rotating parts of the gimbal.

However never use oils or grease, it will make it worse.

Another method for displaced gimbal

If you had a crash, the gimbal can be displaced which is common DJI Mavic’s because their gimbal is in a very vulnerable place.

If the gimbal is shoved back to the drone you can either do 2 things, the first is removing the frame of the drone which you will see in the video below or you can also push the gimbal out with a piece of wood or metal.

However, before you try to fix a crashed drone check if anything is cracked. Check the camera and the gimbal if there is anything broken contact DJI support and they will fix it for you.

caution: Be careful not to dislodge cables from connectors or damage them!

*Also note: you can void your warranty by trying to fix your drone*

If you are not comfortable removing the frame you can try this method

• Turn off the drone
• Get two pencils
• Hold the gimbal and pivot the pencils on the drone
• Push the gimbal outwards equally and very gently it pops out

Final choice

If none of this seems to work contact DJI support they will give you a form to fill, if the drone is within a year period from activation or if you have DJI care you can get it fixed without any cost. If not you might have to pay, and depending on the situation you can get charged 100s of dollars.

After you hand it to DJI it can take up to 15 days till they fix it and send it back to you, and it can take longer if you don’t live in the united states

How to prevent this problem in the future

Identifying the cause can help you avoid it in the future

Sand and dust– Landing and taking off from sandy or dusty ground is what causes this problem most of the time, so in the future, it is better if you avoid doing that.

The easiest way to avoid that is by investing on a launchpad, it is sold for $10 on Amazon and it is really good not only for the gimbal but it is good for the heath of the drone

Crashes– No one crashes their drone intentionally but be extra cautious when flying because you can damage the gimbal or the camera permanently and that can cost you hundreds of dollars.

To avoid permanent damage in a drone crash, you can also get a gimbal cover it is also sold in online stores and it can help a little

Mishandling– I see a lot of young people mishandling their drones putting it in random places or holding it with a dirty hand this can shorten the life of the drone and cause these kinds of errors.
