► Issue — POST Error
Messages:
xxx-Front Audio Not Connected
xxx-Front USB Not Connected
xxx-Front USB 2 Not Connected
xxx-Front USB 3.0 Not Connected
xxx-Front 1394 Not Connected
Press F1 to Boot.
Where xxx represents a three digits code.
► This error may occur during POST for three main reasons:
1. The Feature Byte is not accordingly set. This may happen after a motherboard
replacement
2. The front cable is disconnected and/or defective and/or the front assembly
is defective.
3. The front assembly is a type without the «assembly presence
detect» or «assembly sense» feature.
► Technical background
Re. 2 & 3:
Some computer manufactures are using one pin on the front audio, USB and
FireWire 1394 header as a sense pin to detect the presence of the respective
front assembly.
When the sense pin is:
— Connected to the ground = the front assembly is logically and/or physically
present = no error.
— Not connected to the ground = the front assembly is not logically present =
the error above.
► RESOLUTION
Re. 1. Set correctly the Feature Byte along with Asset Tag, Chassis number,
Product Name, Sku Number, Build ID.
This is usually done on HP computers by entering BIOS Setup and once inside the BIOS press Ctrl+A. Then the above values are filled in under usually Security —
System IDs.
Re. 2 & 3
Try other assembly. Or unplug the front assembly and measure with ohmmeter that
the front assembly’s sense pin is interconnected to the ground pin.
If the front assembly is a type without the sense feature then you need to
interconnect the sense pin to the ground.
If the front assembly is not present then follow instructions below to resolve
the error.
A. Update BIOS on the system.
Some newer BIOS’ are addressing this issue.
B. Disable the front audio, USB and FireWire 1394 device in BIOS.
This can be done under BIOS section devices (device is set to disabled) or
security (device is set to hidden).
This may resolve the issue on some systems. However it is not possible to
disable or hide front and back ports separately on some systems. So although it
would resolve the issue it is not practically viable.
For example:
BIOS: Computer Setup — Security
Device Security
Allows you to set Device Available/Device Hidden (default is Device Available)
for:
● System audio
● USB controller (varies by model)
USB Security
Allows you to set Enabled/Disabled (default is Enabled) for:
● Front USB Ports
● Rear USB Ports
C. Interconnect the sense pin to the ground.
By interconnecting the sense pin to the ground the system thinks that the front
assembly is logically present.
I would highly recommend to use ohmmeter to check that the pinout on the front
assembly audio, USB and FireWire 1394 respective header is in accordance with
the images below. It should be enough to measure ground pins, which also
prevents possible damage to the motherboard. You may also use voltmeter to
check +5 V DC pins.
USB 1&2
Internal USB 2×5-pin header, blank key position pin 9.
Pin 10 NC is usually the sense pin. Although on some systems pin 9 can be
populated and used as a sense pin.
You may use a jumper to interconnect pin 10 (NC) with a neighbouring pin 8
(Ground). And that is it.
USB 3
Internal USB 2×10-pin header, blank key position pin 20.
Pin 10 USB 3 ID is the sense pin. It is necessary to interconnect it with one
of the ground pins 4, 7, 13 or 16. Unfortunately neither of these pins is a
neighbour with the pin 10. So probably the best solution would be to use an USB
3 internal cable with a plug and solder the pin 10 wire with one of the ground
pins wires and then cut off all unused wires.

Our company forbid us to use any USB devices on the PC for some security reasons. So the USB ports on all of the PCs are disconnected.
Now there is a HP compaq PC,I have to press F1 to let it continue to boot everytime because the motherboard can detect the errors below:
921-Front USB 1 not connected
922-Front USB 2 not connected
and display the message:
F1:boot
We use this PC as a server,it is located far away from my seat, once I need to reboot the system(by remote connection),it will be terrible.
I don’t want to get rid of the errors,I just want to find a way to skip pressing F1 step, even though it has detected the two errors.
Can I achieve it by change the BIOS setting?
This is the BIOS setting UI of the PC

Hi I work in seosem.hr, digital agency. So at work we recently got in some HP 800 G1 Desktops, and they are causing us some trouble.
The graphics cards we are putting in them cover up the USB 3.0 header on the motherboard for the front panel, so we ended up getting USB 3.0 PCIE cards for the machines, which have a 19 pin usb 3.0 header that we can use. The problem is that everytime you boot the machine, it gives you a beep and throws up the error «922 front usb not connected». You have to press f1 to bypass the message and boot to windows. We determined it’s giving us the error because nothing is plugged into the motherboard usb 3.0 header, because when we plug the front panel in there(no gpu installed), the error is gone.
You should upgrade or use an alternative browser.

917-front audio not connected
921-front usb 1 not connected
922-front usb 2 not connected
512-Rear chassis fan not detected
F1:boot
Like this:
picture1
So the server won’t boot up unless someone presses the F1 key. That’s just stupid right? the bios setup has an <<<option>>> for this but it doesn’t do anything! the problem goes on!
The solution:
For the first 3 errors just put a jumper in each header like this:
image1
it will look like this:
picture2
As for the last one (512-Rear chassis fan not detected) what I did was simple, i took the sense signal from the cpu fan (the green cable in my case) and connected it to the rear fan header with a jumper cable like this:

What system is it?
What’s the background to the problem? e.g. new machine, old machine, anything happen recently like it was moved, or Windows updates…
